Why are there ridges on tin cans?2020-01-15T20:06:44+02:00
CONTACT US

Here’s why some tins are smooth and others have ridges:

  • 1.) Ribbing on Tin Cans strengthens the tin.

You can see the general principle in cardboard. The centre is corrugated because a little paper can add a lot of strength that way. The can is curved and the ridges reduce your ability to dent the can with normal handling. Compare to a typical aluminium soda can that has thinner walls and no corrugation of the metal. It’s pretty easy to dent empty soda cans with hand pressure. The area of the food can with the ridges will be quite hard to dent with hand pressure.

  • 2.) Furthermore, the ridges on tins allow it to expand and contract.

As part of the canning process, filled cans are often heated to cook and sterilise the contents. This can build up a fair amount of pressure, and the ridges let the can handle that without splitting.

  • 3.) Not all tin cans require ribbing.

The sides of the can are ribbed to increase the strength of the can and provide protection against the high temperatures and vacuum pressures of thermal processing and boiling preservation during the canning process. Certain products such as coffee do not require the cans to undergo such procedures and thus you will often find coffee cans with no ribbing at all.

What is a Can Seamer?2019-02-26T06:44:42+02:00
Food Cans for Sale South Africa

What is a Can Seamer?

A can seamer is a machine used to seal the lid to the can body. The lid or “end” is usually tinplated steel while the body can be of metal (such as cans for beverages and soups), paperboard (whisky cans) or plastic.

The seam formed is generally leak-proof, but this depends on the product being canned. The seam is made by mechanically overlapping the two layers to form a hook.

Different parameters of the hook are measured and monitored to check the integrity of the seam under different conditions.

The shape of the double seam is determined by the shape of the seamer roll profile and the relative position. During the can seaming process, the seamer chuck holds the can while the rolls rotate around it. Initially, the first operation roll folds the lid (end) and then the second operation rolls tighten the resulting seam.

The first operation seam is critical to avoid problems like wrinkles (tightness issues) and leaks. The shape of the seam is determined by the shape of the first operation roll, the second operation roll, their relative positions and distances, lifter height, lifter pressure. Any damage or problems to the seamer or seamer tools can cause severe problems to the double seam like seam bumps, wrinkles, sharp seams, and open seams.

Canning Methods

Food Preservation during the Canning Process

To prevent the food from being spoiled before and during containment, a number of methods are used: pasteurisation, boiling (and other applications of high temperature over a period of time), refrigeration, freezing, drying, vacuum treatment, antimicrobial agents that are natural to the recipe of the foods being preserved, a sufficient dose of ionizing radiation, submersion in a strong saline solution, acid, base, osmotically extreme (for example very sugary) or other microbially-challenging environments.

Other than sterilization, no method is perfectly dependable as a preservative. For example, the microorganism Clostridium botulinum (which causes botulism) can only be eliminated at temperatures above the boiling point of water.

From a public safety point of view, foods with low acidity (a pH more than 4.6) need sterilization under high temperature (116–130 °C). To achieve temperatures above the boiling point requires the use of a pressure canner.

Foods that must be pressure canned include most vegetables, meat, seafood, poultry, and dairy products. The only foods that may be safely canned in an ordinary boiling water bath are highly acidic ones with a pH below 4.6, such as fruits, pickled vegetables, or other foods to which acidic additives have been added.

Bottom line… If you’re in need of a Canning company to package your product – then contact us. Each product requires a different process. We’ve been doing this for over 2 decades and will guide you to the best promotional and packaging solution.

Process of Making Tins2019-02-26T06:50:32+02:00

What is the process of manufacturing tin cans?

Rimmed three-piece can construction involves several stages;

  • Forming a tube and welding or soldering the seam of the sides
  • Joining the bottom end to the tube
  • Printing or attaching labels to the can
  • Filling the can with content; sterilization or retorting is required for many food products
  • Joining the wall and top “end”.

Double seam rims are crucial to the joining of the wall to a top or bottom surface. An extremely tight fit between the pieces must be accomplished to prevent leakage; the process of accomplishing this radically deforms the rims of the parts. Part of the tube that forms the wall is bent, almost at its end, turning outward through 90 degrees, and then bent further, toward the middle of the tube, until it is parallel to the rest of the tube, a total bend of 180 degrees.

The outer edge of the flat piece is bent against this toward the middle of the tubular wall, until parallel with the wall, turning inward through 90 degrees. The edge of the bent portion is bent further through another 90 degrees, inward now toward the axis of the tube and parallel to the main portion of the flat piece, making a total bend of 180 degrees. It is bent far enough inward that its circular edge is now slightly smaller in diameter than the edge of the tube. Bending it yet further, until it is parallel with the tube’s axis, gives it a total bend of 270 degrees. It now envelops the outward rim of the tube.

Looking outward from the axis of the tube, the first surface is the unbent portion of the tube. Slightly further out is a narrow portion of the top, including its edge. The outward-bent portion of the tube, including its edge, is still slightly further out. Furthest out is the 90-degree-bent portion of the flat surface.

The combined interacting forces, as the portion of the flat surface adjacent to the interior of the tube, is indented toward the middle of the tube and then outward forward the axis of the tube, and the other bent portions of the flat piece and the tube are all forced toward the axis of the tube, drives these five thicknesses of metal against each other from inside and out, forming a “dry” joint so tight that welding or solder is not needed to strengthen or seal it.

Tin Can Seams - What is a double seam?

What is a Double Seam?

A double seam is a canning process for sealing a tin can by mechanically interlocking the can body and a can end (or lid).

Originally, the can end was soldered or welded onto the can body after the can was filled. However, this introduced a variety of issues, such as foreign contaminants (including lead and other harmful heavy metals). The double seam was later developed as a cheaper and safer alternative and quickly replaced the welded seam.

The double seam is made using a double seamer, which can have just one or a number of heads or seaming stations. The double seam is formed by mechanically interlocking five layers of material together: three layers of the can end and two layers of the can body. Each seaming head typically consists of two rolls, a first operation roll and second operation roll, and a chuck. Some seaming machines have two first operation rolls and two-second operation rolls and a few machines use a method called “rail seaming” which requires no rolls.

During the seaming operation, the can-end is lowered on to the filled can-body and held down by the chuck, which acts as an anvil to the seaming operation.

The first operation roll then engages the can end against the can body thereby folding the end curl around the flange of the body. In some seaming machines, this is done as the can is turning at high speed. In other seaming machines, the can is stationary and the first operation roll (or rolls) spins around several times to ensure a complete first operation. After the first operation is complete, the first operation roll disengages from the can and the second operation roll then engages the can.

The purpose of the second operation is to iron out the double seam into its final shape and remove the voids between the layers of can and end material. In practice, ironing out all of the cans and end material in a double seam without leaving some voids is impossible without the use of a sealing compound.

What is a Tin Can?

A tin can, tin (especially in British English, Australian English and Canadian English), steel can, steel packaging or a can, is a container for the distribution or storage of goods, composed of thin metal. Many cans require opening by cutting the “end” open; others have removable covers.

Cans hold diverse contents: foods, beverages, oil, chemicals, etc. Steel cans are made of tinplate (tin-coated steel) or of tin-free steel. In some dialects, even aluminium cans are called “tin cans”.

What is a tin can?

Tin cans are containers most commonly used in commercial production, to package or store items like food or other products. ‘Tin cans’, also known as ‘tins’; ‘steel cans’; ‘cans’; and ‘steel packaging’, are made of a metal material that is easy to cut, such as aluminium or tinplate steel

EPOL LIDS | Alufix Peel-Off Lids | Easy Peel-Off Lids

The easy-peelable Alufix Dry membrane for sealing onto tinplate rings provides the can with a safe and convenient closure solution for canned goods. With its aluminium layer, Alufix Dry offers the best possible protection for all dry products which do not require heat treatment after filling.

The Easy Peel-Off Lid (EPOL) is a technology in the food packaging industry, which is gaining market share with respect to the well known Easy Open End (EOE) closure. The EPOL is easier to open and to produce than the EOE closure and consists of two parts: the protact ring and the alufix. The protact ring is made of polymer coated steel and the alufix is an aluminium foil, which is often coated with a peelable PolyPropylene (PP) layer. The polymer layers of protact and alufix are heat sealed together, achieving an airtight closure.

Alufix makes opening a can child’s play! Can It’s peelable lid for sealing onto tinplate rings provides the can with a safe and convenient closure solution. With its aluminium layer, Alufix offers the best possible protection for dry products.

Easy Open Ends | Metal Pull-Ring Lids | EZO LIDS / EOE LIDS

Our easy open ends are made of tinplate and are available for packing foods such as tuna fish, tomato paste, fruits, vegetables, juices, curry, meat, mushrooms, nuts, milk powder, coffee, vegetable oils, motor oils and almost all other types of food and non-food products. These easy open lids are made as ‘full aperture openings’ only. Our ends are suitable for pasteurization, sterilization and retorting.

Outside of the EOE can be gold lacquered or clear lacquered. Our EZO lids are printed with opening instructions. Many of our customers purchase easy open ends with their logo printed on outside of these Can Ends, this requires a certain order quantity. Such printed Can ends are commonly used to increase brand awareness and for running promotion campaigns.

Inside of the Easy Open Covers is usually lacquered. The type of internal lacquer can be epoxy phenolic, organosol or aluminized as per customer request and end application. The colour of internal lacquer can be Gold or Clear. All the lacquers used in our lids are approved by relevant authorities.

Plain End Lids | Open Top Cans with Lids | Food Can Lid

With a lacquer coating on all plain ends, this tin can lid is ideal for any edible or non-edible product. Save on cost with using these standard lids, as opposed to peel-off and pull-ring lids. The buyers and recipients of your tin cans will require a can-opener to open tins which are sealed with this type of closure.

Available with or without ribbing (lines or smooth), keep it simple by having your cans sealed with these lids which are made of the same material as the tin can itself.  Suitable to be branded and printed with your custom design, these lids are great for promotional and marketing use.

Paint Can Lids | Triple Tite Metal Lids | TT Lids / RL Lids

The Triple Tite closure is very suitable for flat plate lids. Tins with this type of closure are sometimes harder to re-close because residue can be left in the rim after the paint is poured out. The TT closure is particularly important for mixed lacquers because the stirrer lid can be clicked into place under the edge. In general, the TT closure is experienced by its users that the lid is more easy to re(open) than an RL closure.

The performance/tightness of the Tripe Tite closure is similar to the RL closure. The TT closure is less closed than an RL closure. For good air-tightness, we advise turning the tin cans upside down after filling, that the air-tightness off the lid/ring connection will be optimal.

  • The TT closure has a flat lid.
  • The TT lid falls in the rim of the tin.
  • The TT closure is used mainly on the professional market.

Plastic Tin Can Lids | Resealable Plastic Lids| SC Lids / LDPE Lids

These plastic lids for open-top cans are pliable and reusable, low-density polyethene (LDPE), natural in colour. The perfect addition to your tin cans if you want them to be reused. Our standard plastic lids are clear (see-through) and can be moulded or printed with your logo on quantity.  Ideal for coffee, biscuits, powder or gifts.

Available in various different diameters. A simple and low-cost addition to your product – don’t forget to add these to your order. These lids make the cans completely resealable and air-tight for keeping your contents fresh and new.

Take note: these lids will only fit once the tins have been sealed or the sharp edges of the tin have been rolled down. Before the tin is sealed, the diameter is wider and will not fit the lids. To have these lids custom printed or moulded would require a large order quantity.

Can I seal tin cans myself?2019-03-04T08:40:02+02:00

Can I seal tin cans myself?

Generally, no. But theoretically, if you plan on large order quantities such as 50 000 or above – yes, you could perform the sealing process yourself and just buy the odds and ends separately from us. It’s not simple, however, and it may be more practical to leave the process for the experts here at Can It. As you’d need large-scale, industrial machinery for preservation, seaming and printing – unless you are planning on a new retail product with guaranteed regular orders – it will cost you more to do it yourself.

If however you still want to seal tin cans yourself, send us an enquiry regarding this. We have various options available, depending on your product.
